      Causes of the bearing damage

      ?The bearing is a precision part, so handle it with care before use. Even if a high performance bearing is used, the desired performance cannot be achieved if the bearing is damaged due to improper handling. However, under some operational circumstances, the bearing may be used longer than the calculated life. This can be true if the bearing load is light. Such an operational circumstance is, when the rolling surface (raceways and rolling elements) are effectively separated by an oil film to prevent potential damage caused by pollutants. In fact, under an ideal condition, so-called everlasting bearing lifetime is possible. The lifespan of antifriction bearings is defined by the number of revolutions (or the working hours at a given speed). Any raceways or rolling elements within this lifespan should still experience preliminary fatigue damage (stripping or defects). However, wherever it is, be it in a lab or in actual use, it is apparent to see that in the same condition, bearings with identical appearance differ greatly in actual lifetime. Apart from this, there are some other definitions to “the lifetime” of a bearing, one of which is the so-called “operating life”. The operating life of the bearing is the actual lifetime before damage results from wear, breakdown, corrosion, seal damage, etc, instead of fatigue.?
      Actually, only parts of the bearings are damaged due to wear in actual use. Many factors account for the damage to bearings, i.e., exceeding estimated load, ineffective seal, undersized bearing clearance caused by too light fit, etc. Any one of these factors has its own unique damage mode and leaves special evidence of damage. Therefore, in most cases, inspection of damaged bearings may uncover the potential causes. In general, one quarter of damaged bearings result from fatigue while another one quarter from poor lubrication and the reminder from contamination or improper handling.
