      Bearing Installation

      ?Bearing installation will affect the bearing precision, life span and performance. Bearing installation shall be done in accordance with operating standards including the following items.

      1. Clean bearing and relevant parts
      Bearing is anticorrosion treated and packaged. It is suggested to not open the bearing package until ready to install. The anticorrosion oil coated on the bearing has reliable lubricating property. It is not necessary to clean the bearings that are for use in general industrial applications or are grease lubricated. However, bearings for instrument meter use or in high speed applications should be cleaned to remove the anticorrosion oil with flushing oil. The bearing should not be exposed to the air since it can easily rust in this condition. Sealed or shielded bearings with grease do not need be washed before installation.
      2. Examine the size and precision of the bearing related parts.?
      Clean the shaft and the housing to ensure that there is not a scar or burr left from manufacturing. By no means is abrasive material to be left within the housing (SiC、Al2O3, etc) moulding sand, cuttings, etc.
      Second, check whether the shaft and housing size, shape and process quality meet with the drawings’ requirements.

      3. Installation Method
      Bearing installation is based on the bearing type, size, and the fitting. The installation force should apply to the tight fit ring end face. There must not be any load applied through the rolling elements during installation. Generally, bearing installation is according to the following procedure:

      Bearing could be installed by cooling down with dry ice.? If the moisture in the air will condense on the bearing, it is necessary for anticorrosion treatment.
      3.1. Press Fit
      When bearing inner ring is tight fit, the outer ring is loose fit, a press machine may be used to press the bearing onto the shaft, and then assemble the shaft and bearing assembly onto the housing. A sleeve (copper or soft steel) could be used on the bearing end face while pressing onto the shaft. The sleeve bore should be a little larger than the shaft OD and the outer diameter should be smaller than the bearing shoulder diameter so as not to press on the retainer. When the outer ring is tight fit, and the inner ring is loose fit, the bearing should be pressed into the housing first. The sleeve OD should be smaller than the housing bore. If the bearing inner ring and outer ring both are tight fit, the inner ring should be pressed onto the shaft at the same time of the outer ring onto the housing. The sleeve should be able to press against the inner ring and outer ring end face at the same time.?
      3.2 Heating Fit
      It is common to heat the bearing or the housing to utilize the thermal expansion of the heated part in order to install the bearing. It is commonly seen on the heavy interference fit bearings. Before installation, heat the bearing or the ring of the separable bearing in an oil tank for uniform heating to 80-100℃, and then install it into the bearing immediately. Bearing axial tightening should be done after bearing cool down to prevent axial clearance between the inner ring and shaft shoulder. When the outer ring is installed into a light metal housing, you should heat the housing to avoid any scratches at the fitting surfaces. While heating the bearing in the oil tank, a rack should be positioned within a certain distance from the bottom of the oil tank, or the bearing should be hung with a hook. The bearing must not be put at the bottom of the oil tank to prevent impurities from entering the bearing or uneven heating. In addition, a thermometer should be inserted in the tank to strictly monitor and control the oil temperature below 100℃ in order to prevent tempering which could reduce the ring hardness.
      3.3. Installation of Tapered Bore Bearing
      A Tapered bore bearing could be installed directly on the tapered shaft or the cone with an adapter sleeve and withdrawal sleeve. Its tightness of fit could be measured through the decreased amount of axial clearance of the bearing. Therefore, bearing axial clearance should be measured before installation during installation, frequently measure the clearance until it has decreased by the required amount. Generally, installation is performed with a locknut or by heating.
      3.4 Thrust Bearing Installation
      Generally, a thrust bearing inner ring is a transition fit, and the outer ring is a clearance fit. Therefore, a thrust bearing is easy to be installed. The bi-directional thrust bearing should be fixed on the shaft to prevent rolling relative to the shaft. Generally, the shaft rotates in most applications. Therefore, the fit between the inner ring and the shaft is an interference fit while the fit of outer ring and the housing is a clearance fit.
