      Sound, Temperature and Vibration of Bearings

      ?1.Bearing Rolling Sound?
      Checkup is required if the volume and acoustic fidelity of the operating bearing rolling sound is unusual or irregular and can be distinguished by the acoumeter. It is a general method to use sense of hearing to identify irregular operation. For example, experienced operators often use an electronic stethoscope to distinguish the irregular noise of some parts. The bearing will yield a low hooting sound while in good operation. If it yields sharp hissing sound, creak sound or other irregular sound, the bearing, more often than not, is in bad operation. The piercing creak sound may be caused by improper lubrication. Improper bearing clearance may also lead to a metallic sound. A dent on the bearing outer ring race may cause vibration and plain, bell-like sound. Knocking dent in the bearing during installation may also cause noise, which may differ with the bearing speed. If intermittent noise is heard, the rolling parts might be damaged. A noise is made when the damaged surface is grinding, and the pollutants left in the bearing often produce hissing sound. Serious bearing failure may make irregular and loud noises.
      It is true that bearing failure could be detected through hearing; the bearing has to be replaced at this point. Therefore, a good way is to use a device like the SKF Electronic Condition Monitoring to detect the damaged bearing. Compared with the old way in which a crabstick or screwdriver is used to press against the bearing box while the other side is posted near the ear to detect the bearing noise. This invention ensures safer, more accurate results in predicting bearing condition.
      2. Bearing Temperature
      Generally, bearing temperature could be measured in reference with the bearing housing temperature. It will be better if the bearing outer ring temperature could be measured through an oil hole.?
      Usually, the bearing temperature rises gradually with the bearing operation and reaches steady state one or two hours later. The bearing normal temperature differs with the machine’s calorific capacity, heat dissipating speed and the load. Bearing temperature will rise quickly if there is inappropriate lubrication or installation. In this case, the machine has to shut down and necessary precautionary measures have to be taken. Thermal sensors may be used to monitor the bearing operating temperature and set an automatic alarm to prevent excessive heat when the temperature exceeds the specified value.?
       High temperature often indicates that the bearing is in abnormal condition. Besides, it is harmful to the bearing lubrication. Sometimes, bearing running hot results from the lubrication. If the bearing operates above 125℃ for a long time it may shorten the lifespan of the bearing. Causes of bearing high temperature include: insufficient or excessive lubricant,contamination, overloading, bearing damage, insufficient bearing clearance, or high friction at the seal.
      Therefore, it is necessary to continue monitoring bearing temperature, either by measuring bearing itself or other key parts.? Under the same operating condition, any temperature changes may signify malfunction. Regular measurement of the bearing temperature may be conducted with a thermometer. For example, a SKF numeric thermometer can measure bearing temperature accurately and display in Celsius or Fahrenheit. It may lead to machine shut down if the key bearing damaged. It is better to install a temperature detector on the key bearings. Bearing temperature rise may occur and lasts one or two days when the bearing is just lubricated or re-lubricated.
      3. Bearing Vibration
      Bearing Vibration is very sensitive to bearing failure. For example, spalling, denting, corrosion, crack, abrasion, etc may be detected in bearing vibration measurement. Therefore, specified bearing vibration measuring devices (such as a frequency analyzer) may be used to measure the amplitude of the vibration. Unusual occurrences may be inferred from the frequency. If the observed value differs with the bearing operating conditions or the mounting positions of the sensors, analysis and comparison should be conducted on the measured value of each machine before determining the baseline standards.?
